WHAT IS SCENT TRAINING?
The Educated Palate is an excellent option for smell training. Our kits uniquely enable dual route scent perception with both nostril sniffing and flavor (in mouth "retronasal") scent sampling.
Engaging your nose with both scent and flavor can boost sensory function beyond scent sampling alone, and with 25 different herbs and spices to choose from you can create a multitude of aroma-flavor sets to work with. For more information on how to use our kits for scent-flavor training click here.
HOW TO SCENT TRAIN
Scent training can improve your ability to smell. It is also beneficial for brain health, mental health, physical health and wellbeing, no matter how good your sense of smell is or how old you are. To use the EP samples for smell-flavor training follow the guidelines below.
-
Select any set of 4 scent-flavors from the 25 options. (in this case it is helpful to use the key sothat you know what the aroma is).
-
Open a vial, sniff the scent for several seconds, and think about what it is. For example, if youchose cinnamon, you could say the name “cinnamon” to yourself and think about bakingsomething with this spice.
-
Dab a few drops of the sample on your tongue, inhale-exhale, and think about the scent-flavoragain. You can think the same thoughts as you did while sniffing through your nose. Don’t worryabout being creative. Just try to engage your both your nose and your mind while sniffing andexperiencing the flavor.
-
Repeat this process for the 3 remaining aroma-flavors in your set.
-
Aim to do a sensory run through of your 4 aroma-flavor samples twice a day spaced severalhours apart.
-
Try to work with the same scent-flavor set for up to 3-4 months and then select another set of 4 scent-flavor samples to work with for another few months, and so on. You may rotate back to previous sets or mix and match aroma-flavor samples as you wish.
